Book Review: Glue

The Travelling Bookbinder: Book review: Glue: Encyclopedia of Inspiration: Janine Vangool: Uppercase magazine

Since the theme of this month is How To: Hold it Together, a book of “Collage, Assemblage & Other Sticky Pursuits” is a pertinent choice. Let’s stick together people! Book Review: Glue.

The latest (13th!) volume of The Encyclopedia of Inspiration is the brainchild of Janine Vangool, editor extraordinaire of Uppercase magazine. Featuring forty-six artists, designers and craftspeople, each page is a feast of shape, colour and texture. Being introduced to so many styles and techniques is both stimulating and motivating.

You don’t need me to tell you how many varieties of paper there are in the world, and therefore how the possibilities for collage are infinite, nor how brilliant it is to try out compositions before committing to glue. One of the contributors, Janien Prummel, describes how, for her, the essence of collage is “..bringing together various existing things to create new meaning.” What a great reason for gluing and sticking?!

An extra-super-special thing about these books is that the slip cover can be opened up and folded into four different designs. This film shows you how, and also gives a flip-through of the whole of Glue too!

Also very proud and happy to see two dear paper-loving friends of The Travelling Bookbinder – Miranda Millward and Simone Lohndorf – featured in these pages.
