BookLove
29 May 2022 – 14 June 2022
BookLove guides you through the process of producing unique book projects from concept to completion.
You’ll choose the paper, the words and the design, then bind your books, learning useful ideas at every stage through a combination of video tutorials and written instructions with step-by-step photographs.
There will be three live zoom sessions, an hour each, as part of this course. The sessions will be recorded and made available to the group.
With a wealth of exercises and instructions, concentrate on binding two utterly personal hardback projects and grow your repetoire of techniques.
Whether you’re just starting out or already making bookart, this course will unfold fresh ideas and stimulate new ways of working with a diverse art form. You’ll connect with your fellow book lovers around the world as part of a private online community.
Your guide, Rachel Hazell has created this inspiring experience of exploration and discovery from twenty years of working as a book artist.

Week 1
Unfolding words and structures
Start the week with an hour long zoom call on Sunday 29th at 6pm with Rachel for introductions and inspiration.
Immerse yourself in a world of alphabets, libraries and bookart.
Starting with definitions and histories, tips and techniques, you’ll progress quickly to making: a mini series of books, an alphabet sampler and concertinas. Experiment with hand-lettering, word-generating and editing. Re-discover the pleasures of the spoken word.
By the end of this first week, you’ll have made ‘A List Book’ with its own custom-made portfolio case.
Meet amazing book artists and connect with like-minded makers around the world.
Increase your confidence and love of books through clear instruction and generous resources.
Wrap up the week, with a Q&A session with Rachel on zoom on Sunday 5th June to address any queries you may have.

Week 2
Looking, stitching and binding
The power of bookart is yours to harness.
Continue to develop your own style and assurance in the second part of BookLove. Create a shape series, consider how to combine text and image, construct a book with flaps and tabs and get more acquainted with your inner wordsmith. Fold envelopes, get inky, commit to paper, stitch pages together and add hard covers.
Transform your ideas into satisfying forms. With all the tools, inspiration and encouragement at your finger tips, you’ll go on to produce special editions and thoughtful presents.
Stretch your creativity and be proud of the unique Book of Looking that you’ve brought into being.
Join Rachel for a final zoom on Sunday 12th to celebrate your work and grow your confidence in knowing how to continue binding and expand your BookLove further.
