Thursday 13 October
Meet Rachel for pre-dinner drinks at the studio, at 6pm, for an hour. We’ll get acquainted, discuss schedules and supplies. Then fold and sew a simple sketchbook journal, for keeping your thoughts together.
Friday 14 October
Gathering at 10am, then once we’re settled into our workshop, paper folding will begin.
Through the meditative process of dividing a sheet into sections, marking, pricking and sewing, you’ll bind a practice structure this morning. This book will have pockets and inserts to fill and customize.
Our chef will deliver soup and baking to fuel the making.
After lunch, an afternoon visit to a specialist stationery company for an exclusive ink-sampling extravaganza and a survey of Edinburgh’s paper past.
Saturday 15th October
Meet at the studio for a 9:30 start! A full morning of learning how to use a tabletop Adana printing press. Prepare a simple printing project by setting a line of your writing, letter by letter, space by space. Once it has registered to print consistently, you’ll make a short run of prints.
Lunch break treats.
An afternoon composing, arranging, writing and sketching.
Excursion to an inimitable typewriter emporium for machine testing and talk.
Sunday 16th October
A prompt ten o’clock start to concentrate on arranging, embellishing and editing, punctuated only by elevenses and lunch.
Bind pages together with a rhythm of stitching and conversation.
Celebratory tea party for sharing creations and future plans.
We’ll meet at 6pm for an hour on Thursday.
On Friday and Sunday we’ll start at 10am and finish around 5pm. On Saturday, an earlier meeting time of 9:30 allows us to maximise type-setting and printing time, and we’ll finish around six-thirty.
All materials are provided.
Please come prepared to walk, and let us know if that is problematic. The workshop is in a first floor studio, with lift access.
Tea, coffee and vegetarian lunch is included, with biscuits, and cake on our last afternoon together. Thank you for advising about your dietary requirements when booking.
