Shetland Text and Texture
23– 26 April 2024
Join The Travelling Bookbinder on one of their very favourite islands.
Produce a set of seven stitched bindings in their own slip case.
Inspired by abundantly textured surroundings and imaginative exercises, respond to what you see, who you meet and the many conversations we’ll share.
The complete set of books all lined up together makes a pattern like Fair Isle knitting, linking them to the vibrant craft tradition in Shetland.
A bookish island adventure full of stories.
Meeting in Lerwick
Meet for a late afternoon cuppa, for about an hour. Make yourself acquainted with your fellow adventurers, get oriented with the town, ask questions and find out where we’ll assemble tomorrow.
Our Shetland studio
Settle in to your Shetland studio space for a day of folding and stitching paper. Central, spacious and inspiring, with a cafe. Make a journal to fill with your notes, sketches and recommendations. Guided tour around Rachel’s favourite charity shops to acquire materials.
Gathering text and texture
Prepare papers in the morning ready for an inspiration jaunt after lunch. Record and document, collect and research.
Create a bespoke slip case for your collection, gathering all your work together for a celebratory show and tell (with tea and cake). Finish at four o’clock, with your little library carefully packaged ready for the journey ahead.
The price is for the three day course including welcome drink, all tuition, materials, goody bag, hot drinks and biscuits, jaunts, and celebratory cake finale.
